Shipwreck Museum in North Cyprus
The Shipwreck Museum in North Cyprus is an attraction not to be missed when visiting the town of Kyrenia on the north coast of the island. Hidden within the gothic halls of the magnificently fortified Kyrenia Castle, the museum offers visitors of all ages a rare glimpse into Cyprus’s ancient past. The main exhibit on display is the amazingly well-preserved wooden hull of a trading vessel that dates to the 4th Century BC – one of the oldest known in such condition.
History of the Kyrenia Shipwreck
In 1967 the University Museum of Pennsylvania in the United States, under the direction of Michael Katzev, undertook an exploratory survey for shipwrecks around the coast of Cyprus. In the waters near Kyrenia they uncovered the Kyrenia shipwreck, and over the course of a month mapped the ship and its cargo on the seabed using metal detectors and a protonmagnetometer. The shipwreck site extended to an area approximately 60ft x 30ft in size.
The following summers of 1968 and 1969 saw a team of archaeologists and divers record the site and excavate the wreck. They found that the sand and mud, under which the wooden hull had been buried, had helped to preserve the structure. The timbers were lifted and treated to help preserve them long-term, and the ship was then re-assembled for public display at Kyrenia Castle.
Kyrenia Shipwreck Treasure
Many archaeological treasures were found at the shipwreck site. Among the artefacts recovered were some 400 wine amphoras, mostly Rhodian. We can therefore deduce that the ship moored at Rhodes for the cargo to be loaded. 29 grain millstones were also found, along with an array of pots and jars, many of which contained perfectly preserved foodstuffs. These included some 9000 almonds, 760 grape seeds, 18 olive pits and a huge volume of fig seeds. Many of these original artefacts are to be found in the museum.
Getting to the Shipwreck Museum
Northern Cyprus car hire can be arranged for pick up at Ercan airport near Nicosia. It is then a 35km drive north to the coastal town of Kyrenia. Head for the Harbour and Castle. The Shipwreck Museum is situated inside the Castle walls.

Car Video Screen sales on the up
Car Video Screen sales on the up
In-dash car video screen sales are on the up with sales increasing two-fold over the last twelve months alone. Experts claim that demand for in car entertainment continues to rocket despite the impending global recession.
In car entertainment such as in car video screens (also known as “car indash LCD” and “car LCD screens”) are popular with motoring enthusiasts and vehicle customizers who install the systems to their own and client’s specifications.
The car modification and cutomization market also continues to grow as consumers look to make the most of their existing vehicles, possibly due to reduced access to car finance.
Leaders in the car video screen markets such as Pioneer electronics and Jensen electronics are leading the way in in-dash entertainment, developing and releasing new models at unbelievable rates.
The boom in interest in the car LCD screen market has sprung a number of online specialists providing a range of advice, sales and service on leading brands.
One leading car video screen supplier has launched niche online store www.carvideoscreen.com, offering consumers a complete range of in car entertainment systems from leading brands such as Pioneer, Jensen & Legacy.
The site offers a complete range of in car entertainment systems including alarm systems, specialist speaker systems, amplifiers and flip down screens. However, it’s the indash LCD screens that continue to spark demand with numerous models back ordered up to 3 months in advance.
Recession or no recession, it seems that the car video screen market is still going strong!

Ford to Make HD Digital Radio Available Across Nearly All Product Lines
Ford to Make HD Digital Radio Available Across Nearly All Product Lines
Ford Motor Company today became the first automaker to offer HD Digital Radio across multiple product lines. The dealer-installed high-definition radio option is now available nationwide on nearly all 2008 model year Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.
Additionally, HD Digital Radio can be installed on many earlier models from 2005, 2006 and 2007. As with SYNC, the extensive availability of HD Digital Radio furthers the company’s ongoing efforts to deliver new entertainment technologies to automotive consumers.
“We believe HD Digital Radio will be an important part of Ford’s commitment to delivering innovations with mass appeal,” said Kim Irwin, Vehicle Personalization and Accessories manager for Ford’s Customer Service Division. “We’re helping our customers stay connected by supporting the features and functions they want in their vehicles. The dramatically improved audio, text and data features of HD Digital Radio — along with its hundreds of new radio stations — create a compelling combination at the right price.”
HD Digital Radio dramatically increases the sound quality of radio broadcasts and enables more than one radio broadcast on a single channel. As a result, consumers hear a wide range of new HD2 multicast stations as well as their favorite radio stations in crystal clear digital sound with no monthly subscription fee. More than 1500 radio stations in the U.S. currently broadcast in HD digital sound, with more than 600 stations also airing HD2 multicasts.
HD Radio joins other new technologies — including SYNC — being offered in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles to make driving more enjoyable and convenient than ever before. Beginning immediately, HD Digital Radio will be available as a dealer-installed option on new, pre-owned and currently-owned vehicles. Price points will vary by dealership but, as always, HD Radio broadcasts carry no monthly subscription fee.
“Drivers have always had a love affair with their car radios,” added Irwin. “HD Radio offers our dealers a triple threat: It differentiates their offerings from other brands; it lets them upgrade customer entertainment systems in a unique way; and it lets buyers of recent pre-owned vehicles as well as current vehicle owners share completely in the benefits. This is the kind of program that our dealers love to see.”
To support the launch, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury dealers will benefit from an aggressive, multi-million-dollar, 13-week, on-air radio marketing campaign in partnership with the HD Digital Radio Alliance. The commercials will air in 100 markets over some 700 radio stations beginning today.
“In all of our discussions with automakers, Ford has consistently demonstrated both the will and the resolve to be industry leaders in this arena,” said Peter Ferrara, president and CEO of the HD Digital Radio Alliance. “Now that HD Radio is broadcasting across hundreds of local stations nationwide, partners who move early will gain the biggest advantage.”
The HD Digital Radio Alliance is a joint initiative of leading radio broadcasters to accelerate the successful rollout of HD Digital Radio. Current members include major radio groups and independent station owners: Beasley Broadcast Group, Bonneville International, CBS Radio, Citadel Broadcasting/ABC Radio, Clear Channel Radio, Emmis Communications, Entercom, Greater Media and WBEB Philadelphia.
